Here, Dennis Fancett talks about the story behind the poem:
“When our children were small, Teddy was an important and integral part of our family life, as I’m sure is the case with many if not all families.
It seemed natural therefore to wonder if Jesus, as a child, would have had a Teddy, or indeed if he would have done the other kinds of things that children do. So we used to talk a lot about normal childlike things such as games, jobs round the house and homework, and how Jesus might have grown from child into his adult life and ministry.
So our poem was actually written over several years, the children themselves chipping in lines and verses or improving earlier drafts as new questions and ideas came to them.
Of course, our children have long since grown up and left home, though our family passion for telling stories is still seen in Anna who runs a successful storytelling business Upon My Word
And back at home, Teddy still peeps out of his space in the cupboard from time to time to check whether there any children in the house who might want to play with him.”
